Jigokudani Hot Spring, Japan

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jigokudani_Monkey_Park

A visit to the Nagano area would not be complete without seeing the Japanese Snow Monkeys in Jigokudani Monkey Park (地獄谷野猿公苑 Jigokudani Yaen Kōen) in Yamanouchi Town, Nagano Prefecture – near Iiyama and Togakushi. TheMonkey Onsen is located in the valley of the Yokoyu River which is part of the Joshinetsu-Kogen National Park. Despite its relatively remote location, roughly 90,000 visitors trek through the woods of Nagano each year to see Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park. Visitors base themselves in nearby Kanbayashi OnsenShibu Onsen or Yudanaka Onsen

The large population of wild snow monkeys go to the valley during the winter foraging elsewhere in the national park during the warmer months. The main onsen bath was constructed specifically for use by the monkeys. The monkeys descend from the steep cliffs and forest to sit in the warm waters of the onsen, and return to the security of the forests in the evenings. The monkeys are all free-ranging; their numbers move in and out of the valley depending on the season. In winter, when food is limited, monkeys congregate in and around the pools for warmth and the daily supply of barley and soybeans. However, they are still sometimes sighted even in the summer as they take occasional baths. Some would say that this is because they are lured by food thrown into the pool by park wardens.

The name Jigokudani, meaning “Hell’s Valley”, is due to the steam and boiling water that bubbles out of small crevices in the frozen ground, surrounded by steep cliffs and dense forest. Jigokudani is as nearly as far north as it gets for monkeys (the furthest extreme being the Shimokita Peninsula at the northern part of the Honshu island). No primate, with the exception of humans, is known to live in a colder climate. And it does get cold here—snow covers the ground for four months of the year, and winter temperatures average 14ºF (-10º).

The story goes that in 1963, a young female monkey clambered into a hot spring to collect soybeans that were floating on the surface of the water. The behaviour was copied by others in the troop, and soon it became common for the monkeys to retreat to the hot pools when the harsh winter arrived. Naturally the tourists followed soon after.

Boiling Lake, Dominica

“Dominica’s Boiling Lake is situated in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park – Dominica’s World Heritage site. It is a flooded fumarole 6.5 miles (10.5 km) east of Roseau, Dominica. It is filled with bubbling greyish-blue water that is usually enveloped in a cloud of vapour.  The Lake has a length of 200 ft (60 m) and it features thrilling (almost spooky looking) gray waters all year long. Needless to say, it is covered in an impressive mass of vapors. The water temperature could only be measured at the edges, where it is said to range from 197 degrees Fahrenheit (82 to 91.5 degrees Celsius). Since the lake is believed to be deeper than than 195 ft (59 m), no one dared to measure it in the center, where it is boiling.

The second largest hot spring in the world is Dominica’s Boiling Lake.

You cannot swim in the boiling lake itself (yes some crazy people did when it was cooler one year, but this lake is unpredictable), but there us a spot for a soak near the start of the hike in. Careful though, this is wilderness bathing at it’s best, so you want to be fit and a good swimmer. The lake actually emptied in 2004, but as of our last report, it is back to normal now and well woth the trip. Check with a local guide for the most up-to-date information as well as safety precautions (there are sulfurous gases given off from this lake).

The Gellert Baths – Budapest

Gellert baths First of all, before we get down to the nitty gritty of the Gellert baths, I want to walk you through a brief history. The Gellert baths are world famous and are visited by millions of people each year, they were built in the years between 1912 and 1918 in Art Nouveau style. The Gellert baths today remain one of the most beautiful baths in Budapest. There are references to healing properties within the water used in these baths can be traced back to the 15th century. The hot springs that supply the water to the baths are from deep within the Gellert Hill, today the springs and baths shine in their former glory after recent renovations.

Visit The Gellert Baths

I personally have been to the Gellert baths and know exactly why it is the most photographed spa in Hungary. The architect here got the baths spot on with the mosaic floors and walls within the main entrance, made by the Zsolnay factory. There are also stained glass windows and the wooden changing rooms are not short of fine details down to the last door handle!

The baths are also attached to a hotel but the entrance to the hotel and baths are different. The entrance to the right will provide you with access to the baths, you will be given a plastic armband along with your ticket once you have paid the fee. The feeds can vary depending on whether you want a locker or your own cabin, the fee for the locker for an adult on weekends is from 100-300 HUF. I you would like you own cabin this can cost anywhere from 400-600 HUF.

From my personal experience of the baths it is better to start in the thermal bathing area where the temperatures are toasty! The temperatures can be anywhere from 36 degrees (110 Fahrenheit) to 38 degrees (106 Fahrenheit). After a quick 20minutes you can then head off to the sauna’s, take a cold plunge after this. After a freezing cold plunge get back into the thermal area once again, then repeat. This is shown to have soothing effects and anti ageing properties. Gellert baths Admission & Opening Times

• Adult ticket on weekdays, with locker 4 100 HUF • Adult ticket on weekends, with locker 4 300 HUF • Adult ticket on weekdays, with cabin 4 400 HUF • Adult ticket on weekends, with cabin 4 600 HUF • Child tickets from 2 600 to 2 800 HUF

The baths are open from 6AM until 8PM. All tickets are sold before closing, guests should leave the pool areas 15 minutes before closing to allow time to get dried off and dressed.
